Looking up again

As a child, I would stay up late nights (especially in the summer) and just watch the sky—the stars, the moon… everything. I grew up in the inner city, so there wasn’t the best view.

But when I’d visit my grandparents in the country, the sky was so clear. I loved it. The first time I looked through a telescope felt transformative, like I was seeing something I had only imagined before. It sparked my interest in science, math, and astronomy.

As an adult, I started taking photos at night to learn how to be still long enough to capture a version of what I’m seeing in front of me. I’ve had my own telescope for the last 14 years, but I only recently started using it again after about three years of it sitting in the garage, collecting dust.

I gravitate to the night because the sky doesn’t rush you, nor does it force you to be ready. You just show up, adjust a setting, then wait.

Sometimes you’ll get a good photo on the first try, and sometimes you won’t.

You try again.

And somewhere in that process, I’m starting to understand that not everything has to be clear or perfect to be exactly what you need in that moment. God reminds us that we should place our trust in him and that is exactly where I am at this stage…trusting.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
    do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
    and he will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Sometimes it’s enough to just look up…
and linger a little longer than you planned to.
